Sigma 14mm F/1.4 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E Mount
Development concept
- The only* full-frame 14mm F1.4 interchangeable lens
- High-performance, ultra-wide-angle, large-aperture lens specialized for shooting astrophotography.
Potential target at the time of development
- Astrophotographers
Main feature
- Widest F1.4 apertured lens in the world
The lens achieves an open aperture of F1.4, even brighter than the SIGMA 14mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art for DSLR cameras, and has the widest* angle of view of any F1.4 lens available on the market. - The best lens for astrophotography
SIGMA pursued optimum performance and functions for astrophotography to take advantage of the unique 14mm F1.4 specification. -
- Tripod Socket (TS-141)
- The lens is front-heavy due to the large front element. If a camera with the SIGMA 14mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens attached is secured to a tripod via the camera body the weight becomes unbalanced. This can result in the lens position shifting when in use.
- Using the Tripod Socket distributes the weight evenly between the camera and lens, resulting in little to no lens position shift.
-
- MFL (Manual Focus Lock) switch
- A new MFL function to disable the focus ring operation is available. When the MFL switch is set to “LOCK”, the focus ring operation will be disabled. In case of astrophotography, the distance to the subject does not change and it is necessary to fix the focus after manual focus adjustments have been made. This is to prevent the focus ring from accidentally being moved, which would cause out-of-focus images. In the past, it was left to the user to invent ways of achieving this, such as using tape to hold the focus ring in position. This was not ideal due the tape’s adhesive strength decreasing when temperatures drop.
- Lens Heater Retainer
In order to make easier the use of a lens heater to prevent condensation, a lip is at the front of the lens. This stops vignetting to be caused by the lens heater overhanging the front element. To aid photographers who use a lens heater in colder shooting conditions to prevent condensation forming on the front element, a lip has been built in to prevent the heater overhanging the front of the lens and appearing in shot. Since astro and nightscape photography are shot in a dark environments, it is difficult to detect an unwanted object appearing slightly in the periphery of the frame during shooting, and in some cases it is only noticeable after shooting and thoroughly reviewing each image.
- Lens Heater Retainer
- Rear filter holder
- A rear filter holder allows the attachment of sheet-type soft filters. Soft filters are preferred for astrophotography, as they make stars appear softer, larger and brighter.
- Specially designed front cap (LC1014-01)
- Filter slots (NEW) Two filter slots are provided on the left and right sides of the lens cap for storing cut-out sheet-type filters. This allows sheet-type soft filters to be carried with the SIGMA 14mm F1.4 DG DN | Art lens at all times.
- Lock mechanism (NEW) The new and improved front cap now features an lock mechanism. This prevents the cap from falling off or being lost during transportation.
